Kings Park
and Botanic Gardens
There are many exotic plants, and the gardens are home to many hundreds of native species. In the spring wildflower season in September and October, the Western Australian countryside is a spectacular display of some 10,000 species, 6,000 of them native to the state. Also many varieties of the kangaroo paw, WA's state plant, flower in the gardens.
No other city in the world has such a large area (according to my guide) of natural bush land at its heart. The cultivated gardens with lawns, terraces and water gardens are substantial, but make up only a small part of the 400 hectares of park, which is mainly native bush.
